Marion County Fire Rescue operates under new leadership with the appointment of James Banta as Fire Chief on Dec. 12, 2017.  Banta replaces Paul Nevels, who retired at the end of October. The Marion County Board of County Commissioners will be formally notified of the selection of Chief Banta during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

“With a new rank and file contract in place and positive progress in recruitment and retention, our Fire Rescue department is on solid footing,” said Mounir Bouyounes, Marion County Administrator. “I look forward to the continued success of Marion County Fire Rescue under the guidance and steady leadership of Chief James Banta.”

Banta joined Marion County Fire Rescue in 1997 and moved progressively through the ranks to Deputy Fire Chief prior to his selection to lead the department. Chief Banta’s selection is the culmination of a competitive hiring process that was conducted to find the right fit to continue the department’s positive forward momentum. As Fire Chief, he oversees a staff of more than 500 members. Banta brings more than 20 years of fire service experience to his new role.

“Marion County Fire Rescue has a bright future ahead and I’m humbled to get to lead an exceptional team of individuals dedicated to providing the highest quality of service to the residents and visitors of Marion County,” Banta said.
